    Choosing the right pain relief

Pain is telling your body that it is in distress. The type of pain relief and dosage you take may vary especially if you are taking other medications or supplements. Please talk to your Unichem Pharmacist while choosing your pain relief.

The most common over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers include:

Analgesics Paracetamol is a medication used to relieve mild to moderate pain and fever, especially by people who cannot tolerate nonsteroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Analagesics are thought to work by blocking pain centres in the central nervous system. They do not significantly reduce joint stiffness and inflammation.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications that help reduce stiffness and swelling by lowering the natural production of prostaglandins. NSAIDs are useful to help relieve inflammation and pain but should be avoided by people with gastric ulcers and by the elderly.

Corticosteroids can help alleviate severe pain and inflammation by reducing swelling associated with tissue damage and inflammation. They should only be used in severe cases and are sometimes injected directly into affected joints.

Topical pain relievers These are creams, rubs and sprays applied to the skin around muscles and joints. Topical applications should not be applied to broken skin.
