The acronym FOB (Faecal Occult Blood) indicates an occult presence of blood in the stool that isn’t clearly visible to the naked eye. This can highlight different types of gastrointestinal disorders, such as polyps, ulcers, colitis, hemorrhoids, diverticula and colorectal cancer. The signs of these lesions are often silent in the first phases, so searching for occult blood in faeces is an important screening test, which allows to identify the presence of pathologies in the gastro-intestinal system at an early stage. A positive test must be followed by a consult with a physician.
